カイロの貧困区域で建設作業員らが修理作業中にファラオ「ラムセス2世」の像を発見した。

像は約3000年前のものとみられており、高さは8メートル、重さは4トン。

現在、発掘されたのは巨大な頭部のみで、考古学者らが作業を続けている。これは近年で最も重要な発見の一つだという。

エジプトのハワス元考古相は見つかった像について、実際にラムセス2世の像だと伝えた。像はラムセス2世の神殿の近くで見つかった。ハワス氏によると、像を引き上げる際に損傷はなかった。

専門家らは、この像は「ラムセス2世の巨像」だと考えている。「ラムセス2世の巨像」は高さ8メートル、重さ4トンという記録破りの大きさで、第18王朝と第19王朝のファラオが建設したヘリオポリスの神殿群を飾っていたと思われる。
