像は約３０００年前のものとみられており、高さは８メートル、重さは４トン。
現在、発掘されたのは巨大な頭部のみで、考古学者らが作業を続けている。これは近年で最も重要な発見の一つだという。
エジプトのハワス元考古相は見つかった像について、実際にラムセス2世の像だと伝えた。像はラムセス２世の神殿の近くで見つかった。ハワス氏によると、像を引き上げる際に損傷はなかった。
専門家らは、この像は「ラムセス２世の巨像」だと考えている。「ラムセス２世の巨像」は高さ８メートル、重さ４トンという記録破りの大きさで、第１８王朝と第１９王朝のファラオが建設したヘリオポリスの神殿群を飾っていたと思われる。
